Rough Start: 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix – Memories Of Hooning Past

The moment I saw this 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix’s listing, I couldn’t stop smiling. Replace the old Appliance basketweave wheels for the stock Pontiac five-spoke rally wheels, and it might as well be the car that my dad had when I was in high school…you know, the car that I borrowed when the front spindle of my 1978 Chrysler packed it in? The car that I got busted re-creating the “slippery conditions ahead” sign? The car that earned me a vein-popping, red-faced “talking-to” that afternoon when I got home from school? Yeah, that one. Dad’s car was rough, and yeah, it’s a 1976 car…Pontiac or not, it’s still a fully Malaise sled. Luckily enough, even though the horsepower level sucks, the torque that the 400 Pontiac made kept things interesting. Right up until the point where I was apologizing profusely to save my hide

The thing that grabbed me about this particular Grand Prix is that I genuinely suspect that the car is a one-owner deal, or at least a one-family deal. The license plates in the pictures tell the tale: Illinois plates from the 1976 bicentennial, the standard blue-stripe Illinois plates that ran up until about 2001, and the current Illinois plates. The interior looks cared for and the paint looks like it’ll come out with some buffing and waxing. Being an Illinois car, I’d look for rust without question, but overall? $4,500 gets you a good interior, engine, and some body panels if the chassis sucks, but with the overall presentation, I’d be willing to bet that this is an easy-entry classic car.

Hoon away.

I like it. But I am biased. Fire thorn red is a nice color. The 17 inch Rally II wheels would look great on there too. Do some mechanical touch ups and you have yourself a great car.

Had a ’78 Poncho Nova, errr… Phoenix, in the exact same color combo with the factory 5 spokes, and, yeah, it looked right!! Even with a 305 and auto on the floor, it was a fun car, and Ponchos are my jam. I’d say jump!

That car would be in my driveway in a NY minute if it was near me, DAMN IT!!! May have to go for a roadtrip…
