Rumor Mill: Jeg Coughlin Returning to NHRA Pro Stock Competition in 2012

The silly season hasn’t even started, but already rumors are starting to fly about the 2012 NHRA season. With less than three weeks til the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, rumor in the pits is that Jeg Coughlin Jr. will be back behind the wheel of an NHRA Pro Stocker for 2012. Who’s team and who’s car is anyone’s guess, but there have been grumblings for weeks. We usually don’t run rumor stuff until we know for sure, but since the gang at Autoweek decided to run the story we figure we can just blame it on them if we end up being wrong.

Roger Hart from Autoweek has a theory on why Jeg is coming back, and we can’t argue with him. His exhibit A is the fact that Jeg and his brothers John, Troy, and Mike partnered with Nick Ferri and Roy Simmons out of Mooresville NC early in 2011 to form JNR Racing Engines who will be supplying Pro Stock engines in 2012. Exhibit B is the reported sightings of Jeg in the Detroit area late this summer. We have no way to confirm the latter, but if Roger says it, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Roger says he’ll be in a Mopar too, but we’ll just have to see.

Do South Haven, MI and the Gingerman race track count as the Detroit area? Jeg and team were there in July running the 24 Hours of Lemons. Maybe someone should start the rumor that he’s going ALMS racing next year.
