Back in 2014, American rally team Brakim Racing set out on a bizarre quest to turn a Lamborghini Gallardo for into a gravel rally car, the Brakimghini. They made a lot of progress on it, installing a rollcage and even getting it wrapped, but it still hasn’t turned a wheel on a rally stage yet. As of May, the Brakim crew were rebuilding the Lambo V10 and in the meantime, they were competing in rallies with the BMW E36 rally car that made them 2014 2WD champions in NASA rally. Hopefully, we’ll see this thing flying through the gravel stages in 2017, but let’s revisit it again with this walkaround of the car from December 2014 to remember how insane the very concept of this is.
The long road to rally preparation of a six-figure supercar started with removing the engine. As the crew members point out during the video, the packaging and complexity of the engine required a full rebuild because doing any kind of service will be an enormous pain in the behind during the rally. Simply changing the oil filter requires the removal of the intake plenum, for example, which would be tough to manage during a short service time. Whatever else you think of a Gallardo rallying, this is a pretty cool and rare close-up look at a stripped Lambo and its V10 engine.
Just- totally- Insane
