Fitzee builds some cool stuff and is the man when it comes to simple and stout sheet metal fabrication and repair. He’s a bad ass when it comes to rust repair, but the best thing about Fitzee is that he takes lots of time to show how he’s doing something, why he’s doing it that way, and how it really turns out. In this case he’s building the roll pan for an iconic Datsun pickup. These Datsun 620 pickups had unique tail lights that were fitted into a partial roll pan on each side of the truck. It was contoured to fit the fenders, the bottom of the tailgate, and the bed itself. But they didn’t connect in the middle.
Like many mini trucks of the past, there were some stylish parts but many other things that were really more about utility than anything else. In this case, the roll pan was never completed in the center so there was just a plain boring bracket to hold the license plate and the middle always seemed unfinished. This particular project truck’s owner said that they wanted the center filled in like it should have come from the factory, with a frenched license plate mount and all, so Fitzee gladly obliged. And while it looks trick, it wasn’t nearly as hard as you might think.
Check it out.
