Yesterday was the big day, the day that FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne laid out his last bit of future forecasting before he steps down after his fourteen-year tenure at the helm. The man has been at times questionable and controversial (think back to his days of trying to gain a merger) but for his final act, about ten billion dollars is being allocated to pushing EV/hybrid technology across the board. Given that FCA has lagged behind the competition in this area, it’s a strong move and one that the company could use, especially given that pesky investigation into the EcoDiesel deal. Here’s the gist of what went down:
Chrysler: ALIVE. Holy crap, I’m glad I’m not a betting man. That being said, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands were not part of the five-year briefing, so we don’t know the future. We do know that Marchionne made it clear that Chrysler wasn’t getting killed off. Not a bad start. Now, to look to the future…shed some weight off of the 300, do the right thing and at least put the 6.4 mill in for a top-spec model, then get to work on bread-and-butter cars that don’t look like you copied the Hyundai Elantra.
Dodge: Dodge was also not included in the five-year briefing, but Marchionne addressed the Charger and Challenger during the meeting. For years it’s been assumed that the next-gen version of both cars would move to the Alfa “Giorgio” platform, which is used by the Giulia sedan, but that might not happen. In fact, it sounds like a very serious re-working of the LX platform will take place instead. With both vehicles selling nicely, and plenty potent, maybe not messing with success is a good idea. Here’s hoping they find some weight to carve out, though. Leave the interior space and the power levels alone, though.
Ram: heh heh heh….Ram TRX, a.k.a. Ram Hellcat. It’s a go. Officially. Also noted is the 2019 Heavy Duty series of Ram pickup, a mid-size pickup to play nicely with the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado, and the next generation of ProMaster City.
Jeep: Nine new models by 2022. Among them, a vehicle smaller than the current Renegade, an updated Renegade, a refreshed Compass, a new Cherokee, a Cherokee-sized three-row SUV, the Jeep pickup, a two-row Grand Cherokee and a new, unnamed three-row in the same size class, and the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer. Additionally, Jeep is looking at ten plug-in hybrids and four EV-only models by that same timeline. There might also be a second “Trackhawk” vehicle on the way as well, though the readings become murky at that point.
Fiat: An “all new, all electric” 500e and 500 Giardiniera, a compact EV wagon. 500X and 500L get hybrid powertrains. Whether or not they will be sold in the U.S. market, that’s still up in the air.
Alfa Romeo: Two classic nameplates are now on the table: 8C, a supercar that is expected to use a mid-mounted twin-turbo V6 and an electrified front axle, and GTV, which is only slightly more tame…if you consider a drop from 700 horsepower to 600 “tamed”.
Maserati: The goal for Maserati is 100,000 vehicles sold by 2022, or doubling sales. Vehicle-wise, a plug-in hybrid luxury two-door with all-wheel-drive will step into the Gran Turismo’s spot, while the LEvante and Quattroporte will see new versions. A smaller crossover ute with 50/50 weight distribution and a decent amount of power to move itself is also on the books.
Sorry, just don’t care except hopefully they will continue to employ Americans building their products.
Nice summary. I guess He didn’t want to have to re-name the company FDA, someone else already has that. Or, have there be Dodge-a-division-of-the-Jeep-Fiat-Corporation or whatever.
jeep pick up?
BUT, what is to stop his successor from coming up with an ENTIRELY NEW PLAN??
Seems like whenever there is a “changing of the gard”, the new sherriff has to change things, just to show he’s the one in charge……
I am a total Mopar guy. but I agree totally with MGB Chuck .
So a Jeep smaller than the Renegade…Fingers crossed that they essentially import a badge engineered Suzuki Jimny, not holding my breath though.
Did they truly not mention the word “Barracuda”?
