The Hitman Hauler: This Lightly Customized 1976 Cadillac Mirage Is A Legit Pickup…With A “Golf Club Door”!

I’ll be honest: whenever I see a mid-1970s Caddy I can’t help but picture Boss Hogg. That’s all I can see! They are unbelievably huge, ponderous tanks of a car that don’t seem to fit anywhere except on a highway somewhere between California and Texas, flying down the road with the A/C blasting drinking high-test fuel like gas is still under a buck. To get me to look at a Cadillac from that era takes something out of the normal, something that I haven’t seen thousands of times rotting in someone’s yard or wheezing around town as a third-generation hand-me-down car. This 1976 Cadillac Mirage is that kind of Caddy, the one that makes me stop. Normally, Cadillac utes were built to be flower cars for funeral homes. Not the Mirage…these were custom-designed by Gene Winfield at transformed at Traditional Coach Works in Chatsworth, California. The majority of the car is Coupe DeVille: 500ci V8, automatic, and an all-steel body that will plow through whatever you point it at. At least, until you get to just behind the front seat, where the El Camino-like bed takes form. This lowered Mirage has a good look to it overall, regardless of the wheels, and for long distance cruising what better than to park yourself on a big leather sofa in air-conditioned comfort? With only 204 made, it’s got value, too. Click play below and enjoy the show…and take note of that Polara in the background…

Hey …. badda bing baby ! Atsa a da nice a fookin custom ! The fact that its a Winfield makes it even better And a nice bit of penance McTaggert for yesterdays rat rod travesty !

Warm that 500 ci behemoth to say …. 400 hp or so without losing any torque and you’ve got yourself the Cadillac from the depths of hell to raise cain with .

But …. but …. a bad idea ? [ the commentary on the video ] . Hell … this thing was the polar opposite of a bad idea . Taking what was otherwise a mediocre post 60’s Cadillac at best … and turning it into something that … well …

… hell again … If I didn’t live in the Snow Belt [ snow coming for Mothers Day here on the front range ] …. I’d be banging away on the internet trying to find one of these for myself .

Damn … atsa da nice a car …

That is an awesome Caddy. I love it, but I don’t know why but I kind of want to see it pimped up, Super Fly 70s style, and drive it dressed as a cowboy inspired pimp. Alas I couldn’t bring myself to alter this car in any way, beyond the wheels, it’s perfect.
