As I’ve learned many times over, usually to my personal chagrin, once a car goes into the yard, chances are pretty damned good that it isn’t coming back out without being smashed into a pancake or shredded into confetti. It sucks, but it’s the way vehicle recycling goes. The days of a junkyard filled with a wide selection of cars from many different years is pretty much out of the question…nowadays, if it’s older than twenty years, it just got in, or is being held because the yard owner sees potential…or something similar.
This 1992 Ford Crown Victoria doesn’t seem too bad off for a yard car, but after a recent showcasing on Facebook, it appears that due to it’s rarity and special options, it will be pulled out of the yard and offered up for sale on a salvage title. Now, we’re pretty sure you’re wondering why anybody would save any Crown Victoria, let alone the one that looked like a 1992 Taurus XL. Here’s the special code: P75. You’re probably pretty familiar with P71, the options code that turned the over-fluffy Crown Victoria into a cop cruiser, but P75 ordered up the Touring Sedan. According to The Truth About Cars:
“The Touring Sedan has the suspension of the P71 with the higher rate springs, larger sway bars, quicker ratio steering, etc plus all the luxury items found on a loaded out Town Car. The Touring Sedan also boasts the 3.27 rear gear ratio with limited slip, 4 wheel disk brakes, dual exhaust higher performance engine (210HP), heavy duty cooling, power steering cooling, extra transmission cooling, gauges, larger wheels and performance tires, ABS, Traction, etc. Its performance was rated at over a full second faster than a base Crown Vic and had a top speed said to hit in the 130s. (same as P71) Of course things like power windows, power seats with recliners and lumbar, power mirrors, power antenna, Ford JBL system with trunk mount subwoofer!, Door keypad system, special “Touring Sedan” floor mats and more were on this car. The car is identifiable by the “Touring Sedan” badges on the front quarter panels, the larger wheels, the lower stance, and the “touring” body molding. The door panels and leather seats are also special to the Touring Sedan along with the dark wood trim inside.”
By today’s numbers, it’s a yawnfest. But in 1992, this was something…the Chevrolet Impala SS was still two years out, and the horsepower figure was in healthy territory. The 4.6L V8 was something new and marvelous for the time, high-tech and modern compared to the outgoing Windsor V8, and there’s no denying the aerodynamic qualities that Ford used in the 1992 body redesign. But there is a pretty broad Panther community out there, and other fansites, like The Brougham Society, picked up on this special Vicky. We don’t know the whole story on what was said or done, but a response from the Las Vegas yard that currently has the car was posted up by The Junkyard Hunter:
“Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in the Touring Sedan. Here is the update: this car is going to be FOR SALE this week. We have to do some additional paperwork on it. The car has been processed and that means there is a hole in the gas tank and in the transmission pan. The car has no keys as none came with it, and finally, it will be sold with a salvage title. The car has 55,000 showing on the odometer and will need a thorough cosmetic restoration. I will have additional pictures in the next day or two. If you have an interest, message me with an offer. It’s most likely going to be auctioned on ebay. Buyer will be responsible for shipping. It is currently located in Las Vegas, Nevada, 89115. Please feel free to post this on any Crown Victoria or Panther groups or websites.”
Now, here’s the question: will somebody actually save this P75 from it’s fate? We will be watching.
Kenny Brown up in Indy did incredible hot rods with these and Mercury Marauders a few years back…
Great article! It is stories like this that keep me coming back to Bangshift!
I’d daily driver this beast.
My name is Chris and i wanted to say thanks for the write up on the Crown Victoria Touring Sedan. I am the ebay sales manager for Nevada Pic a Part and have been doing my Facebook page The Junkyard Hunter for about 2 years now. I am beyond pleased that the car has garnered so much attention. We are currently working out the title issues and the car will be available for sale as soon as that’s done. That is probably going to take about 3 weeks. A Deluxe Marti Report has also been ordered and will be included in the sale. Feel free to contact me on The Junkyard Hunter page if you have any questions or interest.
Chris, if your Touring Sedan one sells and you have people interested in another one we’ve got one that we bought new in 1992. [email protected]
We’ve got one. Anyone interested in it? [email protected]
The 260-289-302 V8s are the FAIRLANE series engines, the only Windsor is the 351. Wikipedia is very wrong, I have 1960s documentation about it…
Come and get it. $800 to a good home.
