Australia’s Mount Panorama Circuit is one of the most epic race circuits in the whole world and while we love V8 Supercars’ epic Bathurst 1000-kilometer race there, there’s nothing quite as cool as nearly 50 classic muscle cars ripping up the 6.2-kilometer track wheel-to-wheel. We’ve posted regularly about Australia’s Touring Car Masters series and for good reason: The drivers don’t cruise about like it’s a vintage race. These drivers push their hulking classics—everything from AMC Javelins to Holden Toranas—and race each other hard.
The races are only six laps long, but that’s enough to get a good taste of The Mountain and how classic Trans-Am races must have run. The Bathurst Touring Car Masters races also included an invitation to New Zealand’s Central Muscle Cars Series to pack the grid with 47 cars. That’s an awful lot of horsepower echoing off the hill at Mount Panorama. Here are all three races from last weekend, including the reverse-grid Race 2 and Race 3 with the Australian cars on the odd grid places and the Kiwis on the even grid spots.
