Under three seconds to 0-60mph. That isn’t accelerating, that’s the rough equivalent of a higher being flicking the car you just so happen to be sitting in with his finger. That’s the kind of acceleration where you end up saying “holy shit!” after the event happened because there really wasn’t enough time to process everything during. There’s a moderate list of cars that can match that feat, but excepting the Nissan GT-R Nismo and possibly the Porsche 911 GT3, the list is full of hyper-exotics. Oh, and the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Dodge Charger Hellcat. The actual numbers:
Chevrolet Corvette Z06: 2.95 seconds
Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat: 2.9 seconds
Let’s put this into perspective: In 2005 the Z06 ran the time in 3.4 seconds, which isn’t much to laugh at either. In 1995 0-60 came up in 5.1 seconds, and that could easily be beaten by a slightly tweaked Mitsubishi EVO.
The Charger is an even more broad story. In 1968, an automatic Charger could run 4.7 seconds…even by current standards the Charger was one bad mother. By 1973 the time had dropped to 7.3, and was an anemic 11.7 for the 1977 Charger SE. The late 1980’s Shelby Charger was good for near seven seconds, which isn’t bad for a car based on the Dodge Omni, and the 2005 R/T model was back in the five-second territory. My, it seems the years have been kind recently.
Both cars take similar paths to making the power (one hell of a motor coupled with a killer drivetrain), but they couldn’t be more different vehicles if they tried: The Corvette is a tuned sports car that has been shooting steroids for a bit now and loves screaming at everything, while the Charger is more representative of Patton’s tank: there is room for four people, it weighs a shitload, and makes the kinds of noises that makes the Germans and Japanese piss themselves in fear.
The power is obnoxious, it’s obscene, and we can’t get enough. Long Live Horsepower.
DODGE CHARGER HELLCAT *
1 – ASS- HAUL’N
4 DOOR !!!!!!!!
Lets put a little perspective on this .
The numbers are exaggerated at best .. faked at worst . And if faked they’re being faked using the oldest trick in the book . Anything but showroom stock cars being used to attain the inflated numbers . A little party trick FCA ala Ferrari is all too well versed in and GM has been using for years . Period !
So drop the enthusiasm and optimism . You’ll never even come close to these numbers should you throw your money away on any of these pos . Not to mention … the Z06 .. might try to kill you in the process 😉
You Sir, are the reason cars like these don’t typically get built. Please enjoy your Hyundai while the rest of us try to figure out how much junk we’d have to sell to get a Hellcat.
Big numbers sure…………..im sure as we speak there are old men buying these cars and going to the strip and run 13-14’s……..they be like ” I cant get it to hook to much power” or the dude will pull out of your local car show. get sideways and hit a on coming car……..just cars for old rich dudes trying to be cool……..I’ve got more respect for people how make junk fly on the cheap……..big money will always buy you the best…..but what can you do with your skills ?
On 2nd thought My dad…..OLD MAN…also. has a 76 CJ5 with a 401 on 33″ mud tires that makes these kinds of cars look like punks……goes low 11’s and just about low tech as can be.
I will really never get people who trash the new cars. We are in the golden age of horsepower, handling, comfort, AND efficiency. All at the same time. Not to mention that we get the benefit of crate motors, parts from wrecks, new technologies to make our cars faster, etc… Get real. I love the oldies and low tech, but how can you not just be in awe of what is available straight from the dealer right now?
Now that I think about it I really want a “300HC” ie. A Hellcat powered Chrysler 300. Then I can go hunt for BMW M5s to eat for lunch.
