A Look Back At Mitsubishi’s Better Years With A 1973 Colt Galant GTO GS-R

A Look Back At Mitsubishi’s Better Years With A 1973 Colt Galant GTO GS-R

Currently, Mitsubishi is one of those car manufacturers that is sitting on everyone’s “Death Watch”. We get the Outlander and the horrifyingly bad Mirage, a car the shape and color of an easter egg that has all the excitement and desirability of an Easter Bunny poo pellet. It’s been a sad sight, watching cars like the Eclipse, EVO series, and 3000GT fade off with no real replacement, but at one point in time Mitsubishi actually made exciting little vehicles and it really started with cars like this Petrolicious-filmed Colt Galant GTO GS-R.

The name and background will be explained in the video, but take a look at it. Looks like a cross between a shrunken muscle car and an early Celica, doesn’t it? In fact, it was Toyota who was accused of cribbing the styling of the Galant GTO when they brought out the Celica Liftback in 1973. It’s a handsome little beast, about the size of a Datsun 510, and is rare enough nowadays to be a collector’s item. But we like to think of it a different way: it’s a small, light four-banger that looks like nothing else on the road, that could be driven fairly often in comfort and could drive like a go-kart. It’s got a power-to-weight ratio that would make it fun, but it isn’t overpowered, so finding the limits won’t kill you automatically. Is it wrong that we want one?
