Jimmy Barton is a bad ass ladies and gentleman, and has a bunch of records here at Bonneville behind the wheel of the famed Jesel Racing Dodge Ram Pickup. He’s driven it with everything from 4 – 8 cylinders, and with and without power adders. In all the years, and all the runs, he’s never ever spun before. That changed yesterday when he got the Ram hooked up on course #2 and was hauling the mail through the 4th mile at 260MPH and the truck decided the added boost Jimmy was giving it via the button on the steering wheel was not going to work. The truck spun and according to witnesses the number of spins was between 6 and 10.

The truck has some superficial damage, but nothing that would make it unsafe, so they are going to fix it and get after some records on Wednesday and see what this bad boy can do.

The Jesel Land Speed team has a bunch of records in this truck and they will be back with it in 2014. The records set in the pickup have all been in the 220-230mph range so this 260mph speed was really something and would have been titanic had the run been completed. As we have been telling you for a week or two, last year’s salt conditions were super tricky and they contributed to this spin. This run was made with an engine in the C motor category. This year, the team is bringing a B motor (larger displacement) and is keeping the turbos.

While we’re not suggesting that this is the goal or that it is possible, understand that the fastest truck ever at the Bonneville Salt Flats was the Phoenix. That truck was a massive, diesel powered monster that set a record at 272mph. It reportedly had exit speeds of over 280. Either way, this truck is now within 20mph of that number and would have been closer without the spin. We’ll be keeping an eye on these boys in 2014 because they could make some really history on the salt!
