Behind The Wheel. Tradition Recrafted: Son Of Boyd.

Everyone knows the name Boyd Coddington. Even new hot rodders in their teens know him because of his fame almost a decade ago on reality tv. For the rest of us, he shaped hot rodding culture. Both with wheels like none other and a style of cars and trucks the defined an era, Boyd shaped what we knew and loved. I owned a set of custom Boyd’s billet wheels. Not the later cast low priced ones, but the real deal, built to my specs, Boyd’s. And I loved them. To this day, they are the most expensive wheels I’ve ever bought. In fact, they are one of only TWO new aluminum wheel sets I’ve ever purchased. I’ve bought a bunch of new steel wheels, but every set of aluminum wheels I’ve ever owned besides the Boyd’s and one other, were purchased used.

And like so many, his style of building trucks also rubbed off. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, the sport truck scene was nearly defined by his own style. He may not have built all the trucks that were running around featuring the “Boyd look”, but every one of them wanted to be like one he built. His hot rods and customs were also a thing like nothing before him. Nothing mainstream anyway. And don’t forget that Chip Foose was there. As a young kid designing wheels and styling cars with Boyd. Look where he’s at today.

Aah, American Hot Rod! Still search it out from time to time on YouTube. Amazing guy, great show, even watchable when the drama started, unlike American Chopper; good at first, then downhill boring when the drama became the main focus. Why did that always happen? Anybody remember Monster Garage? Awesome in the beginning, then… Whatever happened to Jesse, anyway? Guess we just revell in others misery. Makes us forget our own…

Had a lot more respect for him until the show came out. After watching the temper tantrums and OCC format…I was over it. The cars always looked great, but when you have a whole shot full of guys that are that good, they should be. I’m pretty tired of the “gotta build an entire car in 3 weeks format (and let’s add in a couple of major crisis situations in the middle)”
