Classic Footage: Testing The 1969 Dodge Charger 500 Hemi

With the Aero Wars kicking off, Dodge was quick to get their Charger up to chasing after Ford’s Torino Talladega and Mercury’s Cyclone Spoiler on the NASCAR banks. First up was the Charger 500, an aerodynamic tweaking of the already-potent B-body. The grille of a Coronet was swiped and mounted flush, the tunneled rear window was re-molded to a smoother fastback shape, and the options list was decidedly geared towards hauling copious amounts of ass. The base engine was the 440 Magnum, and the optional engine was the one and only Street Hemi. 500 of the first aero Dodges were cranked out by the factory. 67 of them packed a Hemi. And one of those, a Tor-Red car with a white tail stripe, got the workout of a lifetime at the hands of the Car and Track testing crew. Even Bud Lindemann, the normally straight-laced announcer, has a hard time coping with what the Hemi Mopar is capable of. It was a wild piece when it was new, and nearly fifty years later, it’s legendary for a reason.
