The world of Icelandic Formula Off-Road racing is pretty awesome. We’re talking about rigs that are powered by big blocks with a bunch of nitrous, turbocharged combos, blown combos, and even ultra lightweight 4-cylinder rigs with big turbos. No matter what you like, you’ll find it at Formula Off-Road. Of course, the power is cool but the throttle and car control that is on display at these events is really something special.

The chassis that can be found under all these machines, along with all the cage work and axle work are ultra impressive as well. These bad boys take a huge beating and often flips and flop all the way down the hill after a misstep. The fact that they survive at all is pretty amazing.

The drivers are nuts by most people’s standards, and while we dig it we think it takes a special kind of person to think this is a good idea. Just to be clear, that is our kind of person. I totally approve.

What is the most insane part of watching these races is that they scale nearly vertical piles of volcanic sand and pea gravel. It’s nuts and fun and faster than you  might think, and don’t for a second think that this is JUST a hill climb. Nope, they have to move across the hill and not just up the hill. There is an actual “course” because they must hit each gate on their way up the hill. Check it out below.
