Gotta Start Somewhere: Getting A Beater V6 Camaro Ready For A First Car

Oh, the memories of the first car…the learning machine, the ultimate disposable vehicle if you asked your parents. I knew maybe ten kids who got relatively new vehicles for their high school ride. Most were either well-kept hand me downs or were out-and-out beaters. No points will be given for figuring out what category we fell into. Just in my high school catalog alone, I had the GM tilt column rebuild, Chrysler Lean Burn issues, a battery tie-down that failed and allowed the battery terminals to weld themselves to the hood, and the less said about an experiment involving an absolute shitbox of a Hyundai Sonata, the better. I drove that thing once and swore I’d never drive it again.

It’s first car time for Jesse, the younger brother of Kevin (Junkyard Digs). Shortly after Power Tour wrapped up last year, they purchased this Camaro with the intent of Jesse’s first car in mind. Don’t get too excited…it’s a 2.8L V6 car, with a swapped-in T-5 five-speed and some very sketchy modifications made along the way. Or, as Kevin is quick to point out, it’s a perfect first car, the kind of machine that Jesse can wrench on and learn about while things break all around him, like the very sketchy coil setup or whatever the hell is making a racket during shifts. This might take you back to some of the memories you repressed out of your head, like the Cutlass that created it’s own clouds in my head.
