How Are People Allowed To Be This Close To A Rally Stage? This Video Shows Just How Insanely Close Rally Spectators Really Are

It is sincerely amazing that we don’t hear about rally racing spectators getting mowed down every week, considering how close spectators tend to get to the cars, especially in locations around Europe. For decades we’ve seen the footage where it looks like a car is parting a sea of humans at full speed. It is dangerous for spectators and can be as dangerous for drivers as well, with the drivers having to avoid spectators. It’s widely believed that Joaquim Santos’ wreck in 1986, the one that killed three and injured thirty-one, was caused when he made a move to avoid bystanders that were in the way. That was just about thirty years ago. This footage comes from Rally Portugal, and the only difference is that the camera/phone is attached to a stick. Everything else is still the same: the spectator is way too close to a car that is competing and cannot just miraculously stop on a dime.
