Classic YouTube: The Impossible Motorcycle Hill Climb From Muhlbach-sur-Munster In France

Muhlbach-sur-Munster is a picturesque location in eastern France, near the border with Germany. It’s known for being the birthplace of Johann Carolus, the man responsible for the earliest known newspaper, which he was printing in 1605. It’s also home to montée impossible…”the impossible motorbike hill climb”, per every bit of tourism info I can find. What it translates to is a motorcycle challenge that is borderline suicidal in the Haut-Rhin area of Grand Est. Taking place inside an old quarry, the hill is steep even by off-roader speak, borderlining sheer cliff at some points. The bikes are performance dirt bikes with a wasp-style swingarm and spiked tires that will do their best to dig in and grip. But this is a discipline where too much grip can be worse than not enough, as you will see when you play the video. When you’re pretty much standing vertically on the pegs and hoping that you don’t manage to fling yourself off when the bike backflips, you’re at something wild. When track officials need climbing gear and helmets, you’ve crossed “wild” and have officially gone off of your rocker. This isn’t even a sheer wall, either…there are jumps along the path. That’s right…hills upon hills on a cliff face, and some guy on a bike is going to climb it by the power of his spiked rear wheel. Good luck, buddy!
