From the front, it looks lie a big-boy Mustang, complete with NACA ducts and one thin chrome bar that thinks it’s a bumper. From the rear, you get hints Honda CRX. No, really…you have a hatchback and a “see through” panel below it. And the side profile screams “shooting brake”. So what was the Espada, really? Technically, it’s a GT coupe, but what it is better known as is the first “popular” Lamborghini. Prior to the expansion of the Countach program in the 1980s, the Espada was the most successful Lamborghini platform sold, with 1,217 of the funky coupes sold over ten years, from 1968 to 1978. Other than some minor trim changes and interior redesigns, the Espada remained pretty much the same: 3.9L V12 good for 345 horsepower, Italian styling that is eye-catching nearly fifty years later, and the exhaust note from the heavens. Jay Leno’s 1969 Espada is fresh from a restoration and while we aren’t normally Italian supercar fans, we have to give credit where it’s due…this Espada is absolutely gorgeous and with it’s long legs, would make a great car to travel in. Where would you take this thing first? We’d be on Highway 1 heading north in half a second. We’ll call once we hit Olympia, Washington, we promise. Jay?
