I have a serious infatuation with Subarus, to be more specific the ‘93-’01 generation of Impreza WRX and STi. For reasons still inexcusable to me, the remainder of the world was offered these little turbo-charged monsters either directly or through various grey markets while the best us Americans were given was the ‘98 to ‘01 2.5RS, which came equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.5 liter boxer pumping out all of 165 horsepower.
Luckily, the WRX and STi were finally offered with the introduction of the ‘02-’07 GD/GG Impreza chassis (The WRX landed in ‘02 and the first US STi in ‘04), opening the floodgates for inexpensive engine and drivetrain swaps into these older Imprezas. As Subarus are like Legos for grown-ups, building your own version of an ’93-01 WRX or STi is relatively easy, or you can go hog wild thanks to an aftermarket arguably as robust as any other marque out there.
This particular Impreza definitely leans heavily towards the latter, as it’s now a full-time drag car, ‘chute and all. Oh, it also has puts over 700 horsepower to all four wheels and dipped into the 8s last season at 163 MPH. I think I’m in love.
Not the fastest import in the world (Or even the fastest Subaru Impreza, I believe), but it is the fastest one I’ve seen running a six speed manual. Consider this my peace offering as a Subaru lover to all of you hardcore drag racers out there.
(Want to see more of this car? There’s a video of it running low 9s in its first outing HERE, along with a full build thread HERE)
