It isn’t that the first-generation Dodge Viper RT/10 couldn’t have stood on it’s own merits. A V-10 powered two-seat roadster that looked like the natural descendent of the AC/Shelby Cobra, packing “oh holy hell!” power for the time when the Mustang/F-body war was only in the low 200 horsepower range…this car would’ve been fine just appearing. But what made it special was that it was Chrysler that did this. Go back to 1989 when the early Viper concepts were coming out: K-cars everywhere, the death of the last old RWD Mopar with the end of the M-body sedans, and only FWD turbocharged performance to speak of since the early 1970s (unless you are really counting the hot pickups and the performance Aspen/Volaré twins.) Chrysler Corporation had been the home of tiny little boxes since the early 1980s when Iacocca managed to make the K-car a savior for an entire company. The guaranteed loans were paid back early and honestly, the company had money falling out of places that shouldn’t be mentioned, and it was time to bring a halo car to market. And holy hell, did they. The car had it’s own television show…it was THAT stunning.
Even today, a first-gen Viper is nothing to trifle with. “Only” 400 horsepower is hooked to one of the most potent platforms out there, and if you’ve got the gear to push it, the Viper will go. If you don’t, then you shouldn’t, because this car’s suffer-no-fools reputation is very real. The myth is honest, but what about the reality of a first-gen Viper? Well…no door handles, no airbags, no traction control, a pedal box designed by Picasso, a violent engine started by a minivan key, pop-in door glass, side pipes that were perfect for roasting calf muscles and all the luxury of a stripper-model Dodge Spirit.
All muscle and action. That’s the Viper.
