I’ve made no bones about my love for the LMTV series of military vehicles…after all, for years, they were what I relied on while I was serving. They might look tall and awkward, but trust me, they can get the job done, and they can off-road with the best of them. I know, I stood one on it’s front bumper once. Compared to other ex-military vehicles, however, like the M939-series trucks, older Deuces, Jeeps and now HMMWVs, the LMTV isn’t as common of a sight in the military surplus realm. I always dreamt of turning one of these things into an RV…the bed, even on the smallest LMTV, is plenty big enough for a bed, camping gear and whatever else you could want to carry, the Caterpillar inline-six has more than enough power, and the Allison 7-speed automatic, combined with the right axle gears, make these things pretty highway friendly…and they ride pretty decently, too! So if you’ve got the cash and want to put together a killer RV that will make the neighbors think you’re the next big government conspiracy in the works, who do you call? The company is called ETL Overland, and they turn ex-military trucks…or, for that matter, any medium or heavy duty truck chassis you bring them…into recreational vehicles. The day I win the lotto, I’m ordering one of these bad boys right up. Camping is cool, but camping fifty miles away from the nearest road is even cooler!
Convert it to run on used cooking oil and you could go anywhere you liked for peanuts – and help boost the takings of chip shops on the way as people would get a whiff of the exhaust and run drooling for several bags of chips (that’s fries by the way). Better still just sell your house and live the life of a travellin’ man for real!
I dont trust a man who loves LMTV’s. Something shady doing on there. Engine, trans, t case and axles are great. The rest of the truck is an abortion, especially the cab. 88M out.
