When Matt from Urchfab decided he was going to build a motorcycle, from an old derelict chopper project, I don’t think I was the only one that was a bit skeptical. Not because I doubted his abilities mind you, but because of what he was planning for it. The plan was to use his Xtreme Plasma cnc plasma table to cut all of the components for the frame, out of flat plate steel. After cutting each piece, they would be formed if necessary and then welded together to make the structure. On paper it sounds like a good idea, in practice would it work out as well?
The answer is yes. And it was fun to watch. Every piece of the frame was planned, drawn, and then cut out after entering the information into the Xtreme Plasma computer. Seeing it work so cleanly and quickly made me want one bad. I don’t have one yet, but this is on the list of tools I can’t wait to own for my own shop at some point. There is a lot of cool stuff that can be done with them, and just watching this build series will start your brain thinking about what is possible on your own projects. I think it’s a great tool that can be used in so many ways, and this project certainly reinforces that.
