Subaru, prior to the mid-1990s in the United States, anyways, was famous only for four-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive cars that made a funny noise…oh, yeah, and that one really off-the-wall GT coupe they made with the DeLorean-like side windows. But then a funny thing happened: Rally racing became accessible on cable and satellite channels, and driving simulator games like Gran Turismo introduced a younger generation to versions of the Impreza that they hadn’t seen before, like the WRX. Watching Colin McRae fly the blue-and-gold 555 Impreza rally car through the woods like a freaking Cessna just made it all the better. Subarus quickly gained favor in the performance world as the all-wheel-drive rally rocket from hell, with a flat-four bass note for an exhaust and a penchant for snow and mud. But this also invites danger, because inevitably inexperienced drivers will try to emulate their heroes. It’s one thing if McRae crashes out in a WRC Impreza…it’s another altogether for someone in a wicked-up STI to crash out.
This footage is a compilation of all sorts of incidents involving Subaru’s potent WRX STI variation of the Impreza. Oversteer, understeer, speed, and the car’s sorry ability to fly for long distances all play a part in the incidents you are about to witness. Everyone involved does walk away from these crashes, but some of them will leave you wondering.
They should add the “Good Ol Boys” song by Waylon Jennings to this
