This Ford Fairlane Is Just The Way We Like ‘Em: Durable, Fast, And Driven Often

This Ford Fairlane Is Just The Way We Like ‘Em: Durable, Fast, And Driven Often

Sometimes you need the right inspiration to understand why someone likes the car that they do. Case in point is Colin Sebern’s 1964 Ford Fairlane, which has a Thunderbolt look, but is thoroughly engineered from the ground up to be as reliable as a daily driver, something that he wasn’t going to compromise on. Growing up with plenty of car-centric people in my life, I got to see several Fairlanes of this vintage come and go, including one that was a long-term project that was doted over for years. I never understood why…back then it was just a stodgy two-door sedan that needed way too much work. I barely knew what a Thunderbolt was and didn’t give the Ford any credit. Seeing Sebern’s Fairlane, complete with it’s healthy small-block Ford, T-56 six-speed, and honest patina has finally, nearly two decades later, made me look twice at Ford’s mid-size. Take a look for yourself and see what I mean:

Love it, love it, love it! This is exactly how I am trying to build my 65 Comet wagon! I wouldn’t change a thing!

I can see why Colin put in a small block – to be able to enjoy this beauty and drive the ass off it!

But Fairlanes are effective on the circuits as well – watch the 2015 St. Mary’s Trophy race from the Goodwood Revival where Le Mans winner Tom Cristensen came from the back of the grid to take the chequered flag – mind-meltingly awesome!

    Fisrt On Race Day indeed!

Dude doesn’t think to wear seatbelts to keep from sliding around?

“Patina” is just another word for too lazy to paint it.

Wonder if it is a real TASCA ford car? Or just a fake TASCA badge on the trunk?

That nice new rear suspension is one flat tire away from being ground down on the road with no attention to scrubline.

This dude likes to drive around in rust bucket because he WANTS TO to be one of the “Cool people” that think rust is cool. He has the skills and could paint it if he wanted to or even a $69.95 earl schib special than this rusty body. He is making the point he thinks rust is cool. NOT my thing but if you like rust enjoy.
