The Volvo C70 coupe normally wouldn’t be anything more than a quick radar blip for BangShift: It was the first two-door coupe from Volvo since the 1990 Bertone-designed 780, and…well, that’s about it. They were for the rare breed of Volvo owner who wanted just a hint of sporty pretense about their Swedish safety-mobile. Or maybe for the individual who didn’t want an BMW or Mercedes but still wanted to posture European automotive snobbery. Whatever the case, they were sold and the first generation, at least, was a handsome enough shape, even if that was all it had going for it, unless you were one of the lucky 135 who managed to get a 237-hp turbocharged inline-5 and five-speed manual transmission. They looked good, but as far as any real movement…well, you looked good and that’s what counted, right?
Let us assure you now: the Volvo in this video is way above and beyond that stock horsepower figure. A standard street car needs some exceptional power to walk a Honda CBR1000 on an open motorway. And any Volvo needs serious power to smack 200 mph. This pumpkin orange C70 has both, plus one of the most raucous engine notes we’ve heard in a while. “Fast is fast” is the statement we enjoy, and anything that can spin the speedometer needle to where it’s pointing straight down is just fine by us.
