Under Pressure: Watch This Ram Grenade A Turbocharger – Is That The Turbine Spinning On The Ground?!

Boost addiction is real, folks. You get a taste of what a bit of pressurization can do and suddenly, you want more…a lot more. If seven pounds was good, what would twenty-one pounds feel like? You’ll take that engine from Slowpoke Rodriguez to Mighty Mouse in one swift motion, right? Well…not if you don’t actually utilize the proper parts and engineering principles when you build your mill. Skipping those time-consuming, problematic details and you’ll turn an engine block into a oil-filled glitter maker in one swift motion of your right foot. It’s why diesel builders tend to have some of the most dramatic turbo and boost-related engine failures we’ve ever seen. Understandably, a lot of those scenes involved very built and seriously boosted engines, but we we have seen heads get thrown clear of the truck, fireballs that would rival an aircraft crash and in one very infamous video, an explosion that left the bottom end spinning while the rest of the engine was flung a few feet away. Diesels and boost make great things happen when everything is happy.

This Ram was not happy, not in the least. This time around, the engine seems to have been spared, but at least one of the turbochargers was beyond done and completely “nope”-d out of the scene in one of the best turbocharger failures we’ve ever seen. A second or two into the dyno pull, you see flame out of the exhaust, but look closely and you will also see a tiny jet of flame out of the top of the engine that lasts for another couple of seconds before the turbocharger does it’s best impression of a bomb. Somewhere in the fire and fury the turbine takes flight and the next thing anyone knows, it’s doing a dreidel impression in the parking lot.

I’m certain that the video doesn’t do that explosion justice, and I’m sure everybody did a shorts check once the cameras stopped rolling.
