We Bet Your Fourth Of July Activities Weren’t Nearly As Impressive As The Party In Glacier View, Alaska’s Was! Celebrating The Fourth By Launching Cars Off Of A Cliff!

(Video and lead photo courtesy of Alaska Dispatch News) What did you do on the Fourth of July this year? Bottle rockets? Sparkler bombs? Grill enough roadkill to feed half of the neighborhood? Drink until the only colors you were able to see were red, white and blue? Did nothing except shake your fist at the people who were setting off fireworks at two in the morning? Whatever you did, you have a long ways to go to catch up to the fun that the small town of Glacier View, Alaska had this year. Glacier View is a little over a hundred miles from Anchorage, butted up to the Mantanuska River on one side and some mountainous terrain on the other. One ledge in particular lends itself well to what has been an annual event since 2005: a car launch to go along with the rest of the fun on the nation’s birthday. These guys aren’t playing around, either: all of the glass is removed from the vehicles and the antifreeze is drained out, then the steering is hooked to a guide wire, the throttle is pinned, the gear is selected and if all goes right, flight will be achieved before the inevitable end where the vehicle augurs into the hillside in a loud and violent crash.

Guess that makes your string of Black Cats kind of lame by comparison, now, doesn’t it?
