Watch Tony Stewart Say Goodbye to Bristol Fittingly With Tire Smoke

As the 2016 NASCAR season heads toward its final leg, Tony Stewart’s stock-car career begins that final farewell tour. The man known as “Smoke” to the NASCAR world has been around American racing for more than two decades, having won an Indy Racing League championship in 1996 before jumping to NASCAR in 1998, where he’s been since. Along the way, Stewart has picked up one championship (2011), 49 race victories and an astonishing 307 Top 10 finishes in 605 starts. Yesterday’s finish at the rain-delayed Bristol Motor Speedway was his final visit to the big coliseum in Tennessee and while Stewart didn’t win the race in his car, Kevin Harvick charged from 24th place to win for Stewart, who co-owns the car as part of Stewart Haas Racing. After the win, Harvick insisted on a victory lap with Stewart, which then become some sweet, sweet Smoke-flavored donuts.

At first blush, Stewart’s career record at Bristol isn’t particularly impressive compared with some of his other work: Just one win in 2001 from 33 Sprint Cup starts. However, he only DNF’d at two of those 33 starts, which is an admirable record and he took the time while lagging behind at his final race to appreciate one of the grand throwback ovals, the short 0.533-mile bullring at Bristol. With his fender-banging win at Sonoma Raceway earlier this year, Stewart will qualify for The Chase and one last chance to steal away a second championship before he turns to racing from the engineering stand on the pitwall.

Smoke also won championships in NASCAR with Gibbs Racing in 2002 and 2005. Don’t forget those!
