Do You Care If The Toyota Prius Even Made A Lap Of The ‘Ring? They Do

I’m hard-pressed to think of a car that I give less of a (….) about than the Toyota Prius. The epitome of “appliance automobile”, the Prius is about everything that BangShift is against, and the attitudes of the owners of these little rolling doorstops is so pretentious and upright that the phrase “assault and battery with a cactus” sounds like a great idea.

So taking one onto the Nurburgring sounds like a absolutely wonderful idea, right? At least it might give the little rolling cheese wedge some semblance of credibility. Nissan GT-R it ain’t, but maybe it might turn an impressive time for what it is. Right? Nope. 20:59.4 is the time, and if you think Toyota wasn’t trying, you’re right. The goal wasn’t to turn a quick lap, like you would think, but to maximize the MPG. Using the Euro cycle system, the official number for the Prius is 134mpg. This ‘Ring run got 698mpg, or the equivalent of using less than five tablespoons of fuel. Wooo.

And while that’s impressive, it’s still a Prius. Here’s hoping it was a closed track, because nothing is more embarrassing to a Prius driver than a Trabant running up behind them.

I can hear James May now: “That’s annoying.”

Ah, Bryan, I think the source got the time scale wrong.
Considering it’s a Prius, I’m pretty sure it was supposed to read 20 Days, 5 Hours, 9 Minutes and 4 seconds.
That sounds like Prius time to me…

Of course, my saying that is ironic because my specific “bend” in gearhead land is toward crawlers and 4x4s. Things that have gobs of gear reduction and move slowly.

Are y’all running out of interesting things to post? The best thing that can happen to a Prius is for that 6×6 to run over it while it’s taking it’s time getting on I-75 in front of the 6x.

The best thing that can happen to a Prius is the modifications that Freiburger and Finnigan did to one on Roadkill, run over it with a tank.

No I didn’t watch the video.

OK that was lap one,did it finish lap two without a recharge?

The way I see it, the more eco friendly cars on the road, the less pressure there is on reducing the cars we all love. Just my view.

What the fuddy bluck is the point of running a fuel efficiency test at a race track??? I guess that makes about as much sense as those turds being “green” and environmentally friendly.

Owning a prius or Insight, or VW diesel is cool. I have an Insight myself, Nothing wrong with getting good MPG while running to the parts store/machine shop and getting stuff for one of the 4×4’s or hot rod (1966 Chevy2 SS) .

Having one because they are fuel efficient is fine, I got no problem with that. Having one because you think you are saving the planet and all other cars are destroying it? That’s where the problem comes in.

I’m just saying that my 76 Mini lapped the ring faster than that with the right turn signal on the whole time (damn you Lucas!). One of the best parts of being stationed in Germany, 20 Euros a lap. I bet the 3cyl VW polo diesel would get about the same MPG, my neighbor had one and the MPG was insane.
