Sounds good I do think the P motor pulls harder and higher than E7, and way better than the 73 2bbl motor I took out of it but some of that might be the little extra cam this motor has. I looked around some and it seams like most people are saying 5.0 HO stock limiter was 6250. Its hard to tell where it likes to be shifted I really don't trust the factory tach. I may get one off of ebay instead of a pack of 5 new ones. I want to get it back on the track so bad I have even thought of taking it to the local 1/8 Maybe my winter project should be to make it street legal?

you don't have a hair on your ass if you don't take it to the 1/8... :-)

Well I guess I will have to do it then! 2.47 open rear you think I can make it spin from stripe to stripe? It was a smoke show on the concrete at Maxton and I rolled out before giving it the gas. I will have to get my buddy to drive my 89 down that my car can not lose!

MSD chips vary wildly compared to the tachs I've used - just FYI - I would run it till it stops pulling! : )

I'm totally stoked for you that it went over 130! sweet!

I think I'd take a close look at the whole ignition - including the wires before I made a run at it again. man that's great stuff!

Thanks John! You going to be able to come to one of the last two Maxton events? I think you should bring the ranger!

I have had good luck with 5.0 foxes. My 89 went 131.5 frist time out with as far as i know the original 220k HO still had the 89 oil pump in it.

I got to work to do before I can have more fun with the 79. Got to figure out what happened to my clutch it will not disengage Check plugs and wires make sure my non-P long tubes did not cook them to bad. Install MSD

I want to upgrade the alternator and remove the direct drive fan and install an electric fan.

I impulse bought a new turn signal switch for the Capri rock auto had one on close out for ~$15 the next cheapest one was $38.... buying parts I might need later (if it ever need an inspection)

Russell - at the rate things are going - the ranger may never be done...

great deal on the turn signal switch- sometimes you've just got to pull the trigger when you find deals like that.

A friend here at work is selling off some SBF go fast stuff - including a set of e-brock heads I might not be able to resist for $600.
He's also got a blower kit and some turbo stuff, and a blow through carb and hat set up - let me know if you're interested...

I would love to have forced induction depends on the price. I have also thought of putting N2O on it.

                  Sorry I didn't read the whole thread...14 pages...excellent thread.

If you can only go 135 i think you can do it with what you have and a tune up. I don't know all specifics on the car but an MSD is always a good step. Dont worry about the rev limiter...thats just a safety feature. I would think that motor could go 7000 on a missed shift without hurting it. PM me your address cause I think we have a bunch of chips here. Ill try to find something like a 6500 chip to send you...that should be a comfortable max rpm.

I know money is an issue for all of us but I would search everywhere for a gear to put in the rear...I think using 5 gears will be the biggest improvement you can make. I wish I was closer...I would put it in for you...probably for the price of dinner. I sometimes work cheap and i like seeing people go fast.

Is the car carbed or injected? You might want to find a fuel pressure gage to make sure you have enough at higher rpm. The longer you stay in a gear the more you need fuel delivery.

Ok...i rambled on for to long

Dave I will pm you my address, it has a carb. What gear would you use? 5th gear is a pretty big drop from 4th I would think it would take a 410 or 430 for it to pull in 5th. I have not even thought about fuel pressure

Overdrive on the AOD is 0.67 (=/-) and I'm pretty sure the manual is about the same. I'm running a 3.55 gear and I need 5th. to cross the line within a comfortable RPM band. But with the convert I'm not sure the aero makes sense and may effect the top end gear selection (the top looks like a parachute at 130+). But my 3.55 may give you a starting point. The AOD won't stay locked up at WOT in OD so I can't tell you what the trap RPM would be. In 3rd (top non-OD gear, 1:1 ratio) it was bouncing off the 5500 rev limiter (I have a Crane Hi6 which is adjustable with a screwdriver).

worked on the Capri some today Going to have to replace the headers they will not work with the clutch cable (it failed there are pictures in the tech section) I am not happy about having to spend money on new headers.

I have heard that the stock 5.0 headers (I have a set) will work with the P heads but I think that will kill some of the power and I don't think that open shorties is a good idea so I would have to use the junky factory h-pipe that has been hacked into an off road pipe or get some down pipes made.

On the Corral everyone says that BBK 1 3/4" LT work great
                        http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT $380

I have been told that MAC makes a LT to fit P heads but did not see one on there web site. I did find these.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MAC-1...Q5fAccessories but comes with an h-pipe and more than I want to spend. $508

MAC does have: 1 5/8'' Long Tube Headers for - Raw Part Number: TF72016 Price: 229.50 <-- would be my 1st choice if I could confirm they would work.

                        What do you think?

I'd phone the header companies and talk to their tech folks. You might be able to get some commitment that you can send them back if they don't fit. I have FMPP shorties on the 'Stang and I wish I'd gone with long tubes.

I'll say it here too - hydraulic throwout bearing/clutch - less than $140 from Speedway.... less if you shop.... look at how I put a hydraulic throwout/clutch set up on my Buick project car

Got the MAC long tubes they are the raw ones. How can I tell if they are stainless steal or mild? There is a small section that looks to be sanded (polished) should I paint them?

Don't think that MAC ever built any of their exhaust stuff out of stainless from what I can remember. It was usually mild steel with a cheap plating.
