El Vega-Mino? Check Out This Strange Little Mini Trar From Craigslist!

El Vega-Mino? Check Out This Strange Little Mini Trar From Craigslist!

Here at Bangshift, you know we love weird car/truck creations, so when a reader forwards us a mysterious Craigslist link labeled “Check this weird Vega truck/car thing out!” you know we’re all over it. While we’ve seen Vega drag cars, cool little Vega wagons, and even a crazy 4×4 Vega propped up on what appears to be a full sized Cherokee chassis, I have yet to see an El Vega-Mino Trar. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Here’s what’s said in the ad:

1972 Chevy Vega-Pick Up

Rare Southern barn find vehicle. Was professional custom built into an El Camino back in the 70’s and is very well preserved and solid. Has removable functioning tailgate, rear storage compartment in bed, custom built headliner, tilt hood, 10 bolt Chevy rear end, set up for SBC- motor mounts, transmission mount, new fuel tank, master cylinder, headers, xtra interior and misc parts collected over the years.

Car is a roller, no motor or transmission

So basically, it’s a mini El Camino with some upgrades, like extra storage in the bed and a 10-bolt. And since it’s a roller, you can slap whatever Chevy drivetrain that’s sitting under that tarp in your backyard in there and be good to go!

Unlike most hacked-up Trar creations, this one seemed to have been created with care, especially by 1970’s standards. It doesn’t look half bad! And from the looks of it, the car must have started out as a Vega 2-door wagon, which makes me a little sad, because I like those. But hey, it’s an El Vega-Mino!

According to the ad, there’s some extra storage in the bed floor. This must have been where the spare tire used to go in it’s former life. Those bed rails are ridiculously thick. I wonder if they are steel, or 5 buckets of Bondo molded into that shape.

There aren’t many pics of the interior, but by the looks of it, it ether could have started out as a Vega GT or had a GT interior swapped in. There’s a console and buckets in the car, which is cool.

Here, we see a shot of the door panel and the best fake woodgrain 1972 money could buy. And we also see a hiking boot! But it appears that the door jambs are present, so that’s a good thing. Man, we wish there were more pics of this strange little beast.

The asking price for potential mini trucklet glory? $4000. Yeah, you read that right. In my opinion, that’s about $3000 too much, considering this creation is missing a drivetrain and has presumably been sitting around since Foghat was playing full arena shows, but where else are you going to find one of these? Nowhere, that’s where. Maybe one of you crazies will see this ad, convince the seller to go a little cheaper, and bring this little guy back to it’s former glory.

Thanks to Greg Stewart for the heads-up on this one!

I have seen one like this in the past.
actually the old man at the engine shop back in the late 80s had one
and we were both working on Buick V6 upgrades to our Vega’s
was a neat little car, i know he had passed away and his son who worked at the engine shop had it and wasn’t going to part with it
as far as i know he basically swapped a h-body V6 into his

i gather it was a cut up vega wagon, but it was really done nicely
and yeah… reminded me of being like a mini el camino/ranchero

man…. those were GREAT days indeed, miss having connections like that
learned so much from them too

I worked next to a Automotive shop in Chatsworth Ca back in the 80’s. And the owner had a blue Vega-mino he built… I wonder if it’s the same one

A guy that I went to high school with had one. His dad built it for him. It had a 350 and a 4 speed. It was identical to the one pictured here. Before he got rid of it they did swap a th700r4 in it. This was in the late 80’s early 90’s when he had it.
