(Photo courtesy of Jon Asher – Words by Darr Hawthorne) – Recently a friend sent an eBay link to one of my all time favorite SoCal dragsters, the restoration of the legendary Warren & Coburn, Rain For Rent top fueler, AKA the Ridge Route Terrors.

The Bakersfield-based team was “feared” as they made the tow over Southern California’s Grapevine to kick ass against all the other nitro hitters at dragstrips like Lions, Irwindale and Orange County for decades. Warren & Coburn also traveled the country to take on players like Garlits and Muldowney at Midwest and East coast tracks, too.

Moreover, this dragster is the first to make six consecutive 5-second quarter mile passes and won three Bakersfield Fuel & Gas Championships in a row in the mid 70’s as well as dozens of local Saturday night fuel shows.

The rare Mr. Ed fiberglass trailer, a very cool part of this eBay find, completes the set. The Kenny Youngblood graphics made this racecar one of the most recognizable to fans and everybody knew when the Rain For Rent Special was in the pits, they’d often find the Winners Circle at the end of the night!

The period 426 Hemi was painstakingly rebuilt by engine builder Jim Shewbert and is currently setup to start and run safely on alcohol, but if you prefer, Chad and I know some people who could switch it over to nitro for you. This original car and trailer is not for everyone, but it’s a real serious collector find with a $97,500 eBay price tag, also listed on Hemming’s for $99,500. The pair might be seen as a touch too steep for your home garage. In my opinion worth every penny.

 Warren & Coburn Ridge Route Terrors eBay Find

There are stacks of documentation from period publications, posters, programs, stickers and photos as well as the original 1977 NHRA Chassis Certification tag, are all included in the sale for authentication.

Obviously a car this famous needs a museum home, but it sure brings back a lot of memories for those of us who saw lanky James Warren push the loud pedal.

Conversely, also on eBay, is Bill Litton’s modern A/Fuel dragster that competes in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. This is a competitive ride that can be a career changer or put you into the hunt with a solid NHRA Pacific Division charger.

Recently Litton stepped up, joining forces with Chuck and Del Worsham to make his Top Fuel debut in the Worsham Racing family dragster at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Colorado and deep into the NHRA Western Swing.

Litton has one career Top Alcohol Dragster NHRA national event title at Dallas in 2015 and some runner-ups competing an A/Fueler in the incredibly tough NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster eliminator.

This Swindell-built dragster is a potential NHRA Sportsman player; compete with a Kenworth T-600 tractor and 53 foot Champion trailer, pit scooters, hospitality, spare parts and tools.

Litton’s dragster starts bidding at $159,900, but we’ll bet he’s open to realistic offers, no tire kickers, please.
