Video: This Hairy Sounding Chevy Truck Is A Short Bed Dually With Four Wheel Steering

This is one of those videos that you’ll watch once and thing, “Boy, that’s kind of neat,” and then you will watch it again and start to wonder how what you just watched was actually executed. That’s what happened to us when we saw this cool short bed, fleetside, dually truck that’s equipped with four wheel steering idle around the driveway and show off its turning ability. For starters, we don’t know what axle is under the rear of the truck but it is obviously narrowed as the dually tires sit comfortably under the straight sides of the fleetside bed. Then there’s the rear steer aspect of the thing and while some are saying that this is a GM Quadra-steer axle, we’re not so sure. The amount of steering angle in the rear seems to be tons more than was ever available out of one of the Quadra-steer trucks. Those axles would not allow much more than a few degrees in either direction and this sucker really gets its turn ON.

Another thing is the coordination between the front and rear steering as it seems, like in a monster truck the driver is controlling the rear independently of the front with some sort of switch as opposed to having the rear axle actually move because of some sort of tie in to the front steering. This makes sense because in normal driving you want that rear axle locked in the straight ahead position for most things. If you were to swerve on the highway and that axle does what it does in this video, you’d be dead or at least hurtin’ for certain.

We love this thing because it is weird and unique and cool. Also, it sounds like it has a LOT of horsepower and that alone makes everything better, right?

WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW AND LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS SETUP AS WELL AS WHAT WAS USED TO BUILD IT!

olds motor & trans-axle up front w/a hydraulic operated straight axle in back? why no pics of it being built??

Yeah, definitely not a Quadrasteer setup. For starters, those had way less steering again. Not to mention, that unlike a Quadrasteer setup, this thing actually functions.

No rear pumpkin or driveline, definitely a front driver. I don’t think it’s dually, more likely some big M/T’s. You can see him reaching down every time the rear wheels turn. There were some 70’s GM motorhomes that were front drivers, that would give you the bolt pattern.

If you look at the video about 6 sec in, you see the light flash through the gap of the two tires (So yes its a dually)

I’d guess monster truck parts. And why hasn’t anyone noticed the white monster school bus in the background?

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Quadrasteer setups that could get around 30 degrees of steering angle. But this doesn’t seem to be quite the same thing. The axle acts like it’s under manual control like a monster truck.

Watched half of the footage and couldn’t think of any thing other than – WHY.

Obviously it seemed like a good idea at the time ?????

It’s a DANA 60, narrowed a lot, with a hydaulic steering ram. Those are 22 and 24 inch semi truck steel wheels. Look it up on FB.
