Wreckage Video: Ride Along In A Supermodified As It Touches Tires With Another Car And Eats The Wall Hard

If you have never treated yourself to the sound, speed, and fury of Supermodified racing on a circle track, you’re doing it wrong. These are the most beastly short track race cars in the world and they put on an incredible show. Depending on where you live in the country the cars are powered by big blocks or really pissed off small blocks that are literally hanging off the side of the car and canted over on their side. They run big wide slicks, have the track width of a D8 Caterpillar bulldozer, and accelerate like dragsters coming off of a corner. They also run within inches of each other at speeds well in excess of 100mph with their open wheels seemingly ready to touch at any second. That’s a pretty important point, actually. The whole wheels touching thing. As a driver, you never want that to happen for the same reason you didn’t want it to happen as a kid pedaling your bike down the street, right? Some idiot would get too close behind you and if they weren’t paying attention, their front tire would touch your rear and next thing you knew, it was road rash city on your arms and legs.

In the case of cars like Supermodifieds, you see a very exaggerated version of that phenomenon when spinning tires touch each other while the cars are racing around the course. This is one of the better views you’ll get of what the driver can do about it after the fact. Spoiler alert: The answer is usually nothing. Running two wide around narrow tracks like these leaves virtually no margin for error on a perfect lap, so when you have a loss of control that lasts a second or two, the chances of you hitting the wall are about 100%. Since the cars normally race in tight packs, there’s the danger of getting t-boned and wiped out by the other racers as well.

In this case, two racers are battling for a couple of laps, running neck and neck. It is a great show…until it isn’t. Hit the link below to see the crash!
