Julien’s Auctions was in charge of selling off some of the items from Burt Reynolds’ collection, and while such items as the helmet from The Longest Yard, the gold watch that Sally Field gave him, and some of his awards brought cash in, it was obvious which item had the most attention. The 1977 Pontiac Trans-Am, which was a gift to Reynolds for the success of the Smokey and the Bandit movie, brought bids from all over the world, and once it was all said and done, the 6.6L Pontiac hammered at $450,000. Additionally, the red and black “Bandit Trans Am” jacket that he wore in the movie sold for $34,375, and frighteningly enough, the canoe from the movie Deliverance sold for $17,500.
How many “actual” Bandit Trans Am’s are there? Here’s one. The Ass Monkeys did one. Tim Welborn has one in an upcoming auction (ala Hemming’s Muscle Car mag). How much for one of those little gold plates to put on the door jam??
This car brought more than many expected, but besides being a very low mileage original it is the only one that was given to Burt either shortly before of shortly after the movie release. Some clones have been created over time, but this car is the only one of it’s kind, unless there is another one that was given to him at the same time that he is still sitting on that is one of those best kept secrets.
Apologies due: The ’78 in the upcoming Tim Wellborn auction was owned by Burt from ’05 to ’09. It has no direct link to the movie. The ’77 that just sold for 450k, was also owned by Burt, but wasn’t in the movie and only used to promote it. That just leaves the question of how legitimate the one done by Ass Monkey garage is……

The Gas Money TA has no connection to anything except Gas Monkey. The car was red then rebuilt as a Black and Gold TA. Just a nice driver that we would all build.
