Blog War: This 1972 Ford Country Squire Dually Station Wagon Is The Best Of About 50 Worlds

McTaggart was spittin’ mad after his public defeat during our station wagon blog war last week so he started yelling over the fence at me about duallies and how he was really going to take me down in this bout. I figured that if he didn’t learn the first time he’d learn this week because the guy is trying to take me out in my personal happy place of big trucks. Because I’m still kind of in wagon mode from last week, I figured that I’d combine the best of both worlds would be the best way to land the first blow. So what you see here is a 1972 Ford Country Squire dually station wagon. Obviously not a factory package, the wagon body was dropped on a 2WD F-250 frame, much like Bryan’s Dodge truck is a cab dropped onto a Freightliner chassis. His truck has a desert mural painted on the sides and mine has wood painted on the sides.

The wagon of doom is powered by a 390ci FE engine and while the front seats show some wear, the interior looks pretty good in the rear and there’s plenty of storage area back there for your kids, dozens of cases of beers, or all the trophies garnered from winning blog wars. There’s also enough room to hold the five gallon buckets of McTaggart tears that he’ll be crying after he lays eyeballs on this thing. Is it awesome that the dually wheels fit perfectly under the body of this thing without any weirdo flares or other junk glued onto the body? Admittedly I’d probably want to swap the wheels and maybe do something more aggressive with the tires, but the roaring 390 is the perfect engine for this thing. A blower would be pretty flipping sweet coming up through the hood as well.

I will give Bryan credit, though. He didn’t go for a “normal” dually and I sure hope he has lots of trucks like that one queued up because normal is not part of my program this week either…as if you hadn’t figured THAT out by the looks of this creation. Put on your flak jackets kids, this is going to be a nutty week!

Same here but I’d probably go with a bullet-proofed 6.0. Those things are currently the best bargain in the diesel world.

From what I’ve read, the 6.0 stands the most to gain from a little working over, too.
I think it’s the factory EGR parts that kind of choke things up, but there are a couple companies that make improved bits.

I’m definitely in the minority here but I personally love the 6.0. I am on my second one now with nothing but good reports back on them. Most of the common 6.0 failures can be avoided with a little care and knowledge about the engine. I have never had one lift a cylinder head, and both of mine have had factory head bolts. With a little love, they are definitely reliable, efficient, powerful engines. Most of the people that talk bad about them, haven’t ever actually owned one…

Woops, sorry I think I misworded things there.
I do like the 6.0, it had its share of teething issues, but was a great motor overall that was killed by restrictive smog laws.
What I meant was that in terms of performance, it could net the greatest results with just a little work. The 7.3 is a great workhorse, but the 6.0 had the potential to be a real monster with the right fiddling.
