I know that I am not the only freak for old heavy equipment around these parts and I’ll admit to keeping this awesome website in my back pocket for a while but now it is time to share it with the world. ClassicDozers.com is a great site all about the Earth moving equipment that helped shape the world back when cabs were a luxury, and sunburns were standard equipment for operators. In this case we’re highlighting the site’s awesome page about wheel dozers, those high speed, maneuverable brothers in arms to the more familiar tracked bulldozers that you are used to seeing on road jobs and construction sites around the country.
I particularly like wheel dozers because the combine the behemoth size of the tracked machines with a more monster truck look. The original wheel dozers were built in the 1940s by LeTourneau and they have advanced since then. Today’s wheel dozers look a lot like front end loaders with different attachments on the front but back in the old days they were largely skid steer style machines that operated like massive Bobcats. Of course as time and technology evolved the machines became more and more capable, more user friendly, and even faster. The idea behind the early machines was to have a dozer that could keep up with graders and other equipment that could “outrun” tracked bulldozers.
Perhaps not as popular as they once were, these machines were some cool looking and capable monsters. Hit the link below to see more –
Cool stuff.
