(Photos by Mike Brooks) – For more than a decade now, nostalgia drag racing and gasser fans have flocked to Thompson, Ohio for the gasser reunion each Spring. This year was no different and we were there to see it for ourselves. Mike Brooks blasted a ton of great photos that we’ll be sharing with you all week from the event that centers around gassers but has lots of other classes for racers wanting to take on the strip in their nostalgic machines.
Ohio has always been a drag racing obsessed state and the racers that came out of there during the gasser era were some of the best known. We can pretty much start and stop with “Ohio George” Montgomery as but one example of a long list of runners that would make a great story in and of themselves. Thompson Motorsports Park (as it is known now) was a hotbed of gas class activity during the 1960s and it makes for a perfect spot for racers to come together and compete each year. When we were there a decade plus ago, they were prepping the track by dragging a truck tire behind a golf cart…and it was hooking!
