The Aussies have a lot of this racing stuff right. Consider their Touring Car Masters series. It is the type of vintage Trans Am series we should have here in the USA. Old school cars with old school drivers ripping around road courses all over the country. In this video we see one of the downsides of this type of racing and that is the potential destruction of classic iron. The 1968 Mustang being driven by Andrew Whiteside in this clip is a beautiful piece. That is until it center punches the wall after being tail clipped by another racer. When that happens, the car literally folds up on itself and is a total write off.
It sucks seeing the cool old car get mangled but the fact that it did the job and protected Whiteside is the important part. If he was in a car built to 1968 standards he probably would not be walking away from this incident. There would have been lots more damage than a bruised wallet and ego.
While there are groups that run vintage Trans Am cars here and there, we think that a series with standardized rules and a schedule that put it at the great American road courses could be a great draw. The Aussies love this Touring Car Masters stuff and we would too!
