Drag Gallery: COPO Camaros and Mustang Cobra Jets At The 2012 Dutch Classic

(Photos by Joe Grippo) – Yesterday we brought you the wheelstands and today we’re going to bring you some of the most modern muscle that attacked the strip at Maple Grove last weekend during the yearly sportsman spectacular known as the Dutch Classic. This is a gallery that’ll show you all of the killer COPO Camaros and Mustang Cobra Jets that tangled in stock and super stock last weekend. We’re saving the Drag Pack Challengers for the gallery you’ll see tomorrow.

It is great to see these factory drag machines getting used and abused as opposed to sitting in the dim corner of a collection or museum. When the engineers and company brass at Ford and GM set to work on these cars, the intention was for them to take the existing factory platform then tweak, lighten, stiffen, and up-power these cars to dominate their class on the strip, just like during the vaunted factory horsepower wars of the 1960s. Modern engine technology and drivetrain improvements mean that these things absolutely haul ass. The Cobra Jets still largely rule the roost, but the COPO clan has made great strides in the few short months that they’ve been racing their cars. 2012 was cool but 2013 will be ALL OUT DRAG WAR!
