When we ran the videos of a snowmobile powered by a de-tuned top fuel motorcycle engine the other day it drew a bunch of responses from the quizzical to the amazed. One guy in particular, Todd Staege sent us a note along the lines of, “that’s cool but check this out…”. What Todd sent us was the link to the video we have embedded below showing some of the fastest and craziest runs made at a “radar run” event held on a frozen lake in St. Germain, Wisconsin last year. Think of this as LSR for sleds as the guys make bye runs down a 1,000ft course and are clocked with radar at the top end. Having attended heads up snowmobile races in the past, we’re really wanting to see one of these top speed shootout deals in person now, especially after watching this video.

The lead photo above is a screen capture image of a racer in this video making a lap and the sled does its best to climb completely vertical before coming back down to the frozen lake top. The rider held on like a champ in a situation that would have had us needing new snow pants when pulling into the shutdown area. It seems that at least a couple of these sleds are turbocharged because they leave relatively soft and then roar to life and make big steam from a couple hundred feet out through the end of the course. We always say this, but if you are a gearhead that is suffering from cabin fever in a cold part of the world, get your ass on the web and find one of these events or a snowmobile drag race to check out. The competitors are hot rodders just like us and they do all the same junk we do to our cars with the sleds. Turbos, nitrous, EFI, etc. Dress warm and you won’t even need a cooler to keep your beers cold. We promise!
