BangShift Question of the Day: What’s The Coolest Four Door Car?

BangShift Question of the Day: What’s The Coolest Four Door Car?

This question comes right out of a discussion going on in our forum section right now among the members who are debating the merits of hot rodding and modifying four door cars. Obviously you know where I stand on this with Buford T Justice and all, but we’re wondering what you define as a cool four door. It doesn’t have to be a movie car or anything famous, we just want to know what your opinion is on the coolest four door car.

Aussies have been hot rodding more doors or crew cabs for ages because that’s what they’ve had to work with. More and more gearheads here at home are turning to four doors as cheaper alternatives to more expensive four door models. Take Buford for example, it is largely an overgrown Chevelle (and it isn’t even that much “overgrown”) and there’s always been love for Cadillac and Lincoln sedans among the custom car set. Hell, the Gapp and Roush Tijuana Taxi Maverick is one of the most famous drag cars of all time so four doors have had their place at the table, but it is getting bigger by the year.

You tell us, what’s the coolest four door car?

any 4 door that didnt have a B pillar between the doors so that when you rolled down the windows you have this vast open space to kick the seat back and get a big ol lean on, thats what i loved about my 71 olds 98

    A 1964 Chevy II 4 door w/a factory 283 & a 3 speed manual…talk about a sleeper….I eventually put a set of headers & a small Holley on it….had when I was a kid

Can’t believe I’m the first to say so but the 61-67 Lincoln Contenintal. Despite the B-pillar looking chrome strip, they actually were hardtops and that “pillar” was more vestigal than anything functional structually. Convertables (yes, 4dr convertibles) didn’t have it so I’d swap the glass and whatever else was needed over to the hardtop to get rid of the pillar.

Convert it to body on frame using a late Panther and stuff a 3V V10 in it.

I completely agree. I started the thread in the forum because I’m starting a 61-69 Lincoln project. Looking for a ’67 to be precise. It will be slightly lowered with resonable wheels. I was also thinking about killing the B pillar. Not sure why it’s even there. Door hables will be shaved, the rest of the car left stock. Power will be from a 6.0L LQ4 and twin 70mm turbos or a 88mm single. 4L80e for trans. Biggest hurdle will be the giangantic AC box and the rear steer linkage that will interfere with the engine swap and turbo exhaust.

And the kicker…it will be a project with my wife!

I thought about shaving the door handles, but I like the chrome handles side by side to scream “suicide doors”.

My old ’73 ex-cop 401 AMC Ambassador defined 4 door coolness.
That said, any make or model of surplus cop machinery is on the top.

The Bluesmobile or any old cop car, built before catyletic converter so it will run on Regular gas ! is it the new Bluesmobile or what ? Fix the cigarret lighter !

As the thread starter on the forum I figure I should chime in. I was looking for a ’67ish Lincoln Continental for my next project car and came across a bunch of other 4 door cars I thought to be worthy of hot rodding.

’57 Chevy Belair 4 door wagon
    ’49 Packard Standard 8
    Mid ’50s Packard Patrician
    Mid ’60s Ford Thunderbirds
    61-69 Lincoln Continentals.

I’m sure I will find more.

1960’s Lincoln Continental. It is one big massive machine, and the suicide doors are just killer, no pun intended.

Agree with the 55 Chevy wagons, and 68/69 Chevelle wagons.

I’m a big man, so two doors doesn’t make sense, I hate moving my seat.

As movie cars go, the turd brown Ford LTD in White Lightning is the winner with its dual quad 428 and four speed.

My personal favorite is the ’57-’58 Caddy Eldorado Biarritz four door hardtops were so cool and so expensive if you can find one.

    1. Andy C.

I agree the LTD from White Lightning is the coolest. Funny thing, there was a boo boo in the movie where they showed Burt Reynolds driving it coming to a stop and putting a column shifter into park. That scene with a prop car sneaked past the film editors. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one to catch that.

1957/58 Cadillac Brougham (naked stainless steel roof) such as legend Larry Watson put on the map. Also, google image Jeff Myers’ Brougham, one of the classiest looking cruisers my eyes have ever seen.

  10. Big Willo

The Aussie XY GTHO Phase 3 Falcon in Wild Violet paint. Was the fastest factory four door over the quarter for 30+ years.

Extra doors are still extra doors, no matter how much you try to schmooze it up they’ll never be cool…..

  12. Acf Superstars

Australian Chrysler 1966 VC Valiant. Small, light body, slant 6 and all style.

Well, I’ve had three of them, plus a wagon version. Clearly I love them!

  13. Warren Tatman

I love the round headlight, small bumper furys and polaras of the early 70s. Thats what I want to cruise in, just not in the back, again!

I bought a brown LTD like in the pic at auction, turned out it was an ex FBI car and had a 351C 4bbl C6 and a 9inch in it… Dog dish hubcaps, brown, antennas, it was faster than most of the neighborhood cars including my GTO ! paid 400 bucks for it, drove it to death !

wow, no votes yet for the Tucker?? Ok, I vote the Tucker Torpedo. I’ll spare the history lesson as everyone here should know about them.
