John DeLorean, the legendary auto executive, is a popular guy in the halls of Hollywood these days. The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that there are no less than three bio-pics in the works to be made about his life. The less informed only remember the series of catastrophies that marked the end of his career, but those of us true BangShifters know that he had one of the more amazing careers in GM history before those dark days.
There’s huge potential for these movies to be awesome in the gearhead sense. DeLorean was a guy who relished his rebel role in the halls of GM during the 1960s. There are stories that the stodgy executives running the company were so freaked out by the guy that there were internal memos written about his choices of footwear. According to what we’ve heard from guys in the industry at that time, there was no cooler dude in Detroit than DeLorean.
There’s also that little bit of business that involved creating the GTO and sparking the muscle car war in Detroit. By creating the GTO as an option package and not as an actual model, he worked around GM’s draconian rules and cemented his place in the gearhead hall of fame.
Who knows, the way this stuff works, none of the movies could get made. We just hope that if one does, it is chocked full of muscle cars, Detroit iron, and that is focuses not on the debacle that ended his career but on the events that launched it.
