Weirdo Find: A Norwegian Built 1978 Olds Delta 88 Diesel Camper – Would You Drive It?

Weirdo Find: A Norwegian Built 1978 Olds Delta 88 Diesel Camper – Would You Drive It?

Our man in Norway Arild Guldbrandsen sent us the link to this car which appears to be for sale on a Norwegian classifieds site. Listed for 49,000 Kroner, it would be a bill of just over $8,400 US dollars to take this baby home. Chad started a trend a couple weeks ago with his “would you drive it?” blog item so I want to jump in on the fun with this car and see if you’d rock this mother down the highways and byways.

It appears to be largely rust free and the camper portion of the program sure looks professionally built. The rear springs seem to be getting a little tired and we’d sure be interested in seeing what all was done to the rear frame of the car to support the additional weight of the living quarters. The interior of both the camper and the “cab” of the vehicle look minto, the faux woodgrain in the cabin still carries its 1970s factory finish and shows little to no sign of wear and tear. With only 38,000 miles on the odometer the whole car is barely broken in.

The most major downside of this thing? It is powered by a 350ci diesel engine that was an ill-fated experiment by GM to convert a gasoline based engine into a diesel. There were headaches galore, recalls, and reportedly more of them were swapped out for gasoline engines than were left on the road by the time GM pulled the plug on the program. Slow is probably not the correct word to describe this thing. Glacial, slug-like, barge-esque, and tied to a stump, would probably be the better ways to go. All that being said, a small block could be swapped in easily and you’d be motoring down the road with at least a little umph behind you.

What do you think? Would you drive it? It would look boss with huge BS logos down the side and the bearded one behind the wheel while I slept in the back. BS mobile world HQ! The shipping from Norway would probably be a little steep, though!

Yeah…wouldn’t you jokers look cute sitting on the frilly pillows drinking from champagne flutes. That’s how rumors get started.

I like the concept but I can’t get past that 350 Diesel. I used to have a car with that motor and it was the most gutless car I have ever driven.

From the daze of an Olds-built 400 c.i. engine “producing” 108 h.p. in a Trans Am.

It’s AWESOME. But damn that interior needs more Scandinavian design and less lil’ old lady aesthetics. For the diesel haters, this engine over the years has had many aftermarket parts created that alleviate most of its initial suckage which is probably why this one is still in service.

Maybe if it had a duramax under the hood. Then it would have enough snot to pull a race car or a boat.

    That’s UGLY!
I saw a better one here in the netherlands, 1969 Newport 2 door, with about the same camper mounted on it…lost track of it, but it should still be here somewhere.

Hmmm….. I seem to recall chad saying something about a jet engine recently!
