Alabama Drag Strip Reopens After Years of Being Closed

Alabama Drag Strip Reopens After Years of Being Closed

Nothing warms our hearts like hearing about race tracks coming back from the grave. Such is the case for a drag strip in Alabama known as Lassiter Mountain Dragstrip. The grand reopening of the strip came last week and more than 1,000 people were there to see the action on the 1/8 mile.

Opened in 1958, the track ran until being shut down in 2006. We’re not sure the exact reasons for why it closed but we can only assume it was not due to an unfriendly local environment. New owners bought the track in 2008 and have done a to of work to get it back into running condition.

Down the road, track owners want to add batting cages, mini-golf, and an RV park. According to the story we read, those expansion plans are on hold and all of the attention is not focused on running the strip and making that a success.

The official grand re-opening is slated for June 19th with a charity race sponsored by the Gardendale Rotary Club. If you’re in the area, stop by and check out a strip that’s gotten a new lease on life!
