Ford Introduces Mustang Model Aimed at Drifting Crowd

Ford Introduces Mustang Model Aimed at Drifting Crowd

Of all the special versions of the Ford Mustang that have come and gone over the years, none have been aimed at the drifting demographic. Ford has decided to fix that with the introduction of the Mustang RTR package, which was designed with help from Vaughn Gittin Jr., the renowned drifter. This is a dealer installed package that will reportedly retail for about $7,000.

So what does that seven grand get you? “Appearance upgrades” aside, the car comes with a re-calibrated computer, a high flow air filter, Ford Racing mufflers, the Ford Racing handling pack performance suspension, and high performance Falken FK-452 tires (Falken is Gittin’s primary sponsor).

We’re pretty sure that combo of parts (except for the tires) is available in about 15 other “special edition” Mustangs, although they are aimed at different parts of the marketplace.

While certainly not a bad looking car, we’re wondering how many of the packages will be sold and installed. Our knowledge of drifting is limited, but we’ve been getting beat over the head for years about how drifting is the biggest thing since sliced cheese and that is it sweeping the nation. If it is, the revolution is not being televised. Sure, the big events in California get their share of media attention, but is there really a blossoming sportsman or amateur scene growing around the country? A few years ago there seemed to be a fair amount of regional action, but in our neck of the woods, it has all but dried up.

Currently the car is only available with a V8, but according to Ford a V-6 package will be available in late 2010.

Interestingly, Classic Design Concepts is the manufacturer of the parts for the kit. You’ll remember that name from the totally bad ass “Flashback” series of Mustangs the company built which featured classic bodies stuffed with modern power and conveniences.
