James Garner’s Baja Olds 442 Rides Again, We Go Baja Group 6 Car Crazy

James Garner’s Baja Olds 442 Rides Again, We Go Baja Group 6 Car Crazy

As far as neatnik stuff that has largely been forgotten by history, the old Group 6 Baja desert racing cars rank very high. While we’re not 100% sure on the rule book regulations, our eyes don’t lie and they see cars that appear stock, running larger tires, and a far more aggressive ride height. One of the most famous cars in this group was the 1970 Olds 442 owned by James Garner and built by GM engineer Vic Hickey. That car is back and we have the pictures to prove it!

Run last weekend at the Extreme Outlaw 250 desert race in Reno, Nevada last weekend, the car has been completed restored to as-raced condition. Some details say that the car is powered by an aluminum 410ci engine which was one of only a handful produced by Olds for factory backed racers. Off road racing legend Rod Hall was at the helm in Reno.

We then got all inspired to see more photos old old Baja racing cars. A few clicks later we hit the mother load on an old thread at Race-Dezert.com. This is 20 pages of awesome photos showing everything late 1950s Fords to Ramblers tackling harsh desert conditions.

The Garner 442 is an awesome car and with Rod Hall driving it, the cool level is totally sublime. Here’s a bunch of photos of the restored car from Rod Hall’s website. Here’s a link to the thread on MoParts where we saw that the car was still kicking around.
