Killer Historic Drag Video: Frank Mazi’s Insane Blown Hemi Opel GT in Action Circa 1984

Dawn Mazi-Hovsepian is one of the best drag racing photogs we know. Her husband ain’t a band shooter either, but she’s cooler than him. Anywho, Dawn’s dad, Frank Mazi was a competition eliminator racer of some note in the 1970’s and 1980’s. He ran a series of wild Opel GT race cars that ran like stink and handled like a supermarket shopping cart. This dude had some serious skills to get from A to B with the sticky side down.

Dawn grew up around drag racing and this video, shot by either her or one of her sisters was taken at the 1984 NHRA Springnationals held at National Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio. As the family was from Ohio, this was practically right down the road for them.

With what appears to be a stock wheelbase and a 354ci blown, gasoline-burning Hemi sitting in the front, this car is literally a Hot Wheels creation come to life. Dig the scream of the Hemi and the sheer wildness of this blast from drag racing’s past.
