Event Coverage: The Loring Timing Association 2010 LSR Meet — Saturday

The 2010 Loring Timing Association meet is in full swing with records falling and big speed numbers hitting the airwaves. There has been some carnage as well with several racers lunching motors and driveline parts in the quest for big speed on the long 1.5-mile course. We were on hand and blasted a load of photos of the pits, the track action, and the cool hot rod on hand at the race.

Bob Self is the current leader in the speed department for cars with his Ford GT. It went a stout 218mph and the bike leader is the insane Hyabusa of Florida’s Bill Warner. He rocketed to a 273mph lap on Saturday but blew the motor up in the process. This is a bummer because there were whispers that the bike would have been capable of 280 in the 1.5-mile haul here in Loring.

In other news, our own Keith Turk joined the Loring 200mph club (along with David Freiburger). The significance of this is that Turk becomes the only guy in the world to be in six “200” clubs. We were quite proud to be on hand to witness one of our pals doing something no one else has ever done. A worthy accomplishment buy a guy we have lots of respect for. Good show old chap!

Luckily, the breakage that has come about has not resulted in any big delays or a wrecked track. There has been some ugliness, but it has all been contained or handled quickly.

Sunday should be a riot (despite our level three sun burn) with several competitors letting us know that they were going to “let their junk eat” on the great course here in Maine. Play time is over, this is all business now. We bet Self’s 218 doesn’t make it to lunch time.

Stay tuned!
