Judging The 2015 Gran Turismo Awards At SEMA – We Had The Gloriously Impossible Task

Judging The 2015 Gran Turismo Awards At SEMA – We Had The Gloriously Impossible Task

About a week ahead of the 2015 SEMA show I got a call from the people at Gran Turismo and they asked if I would be interested judging the Hot Rod class of the 2015 Gran Turismo awards at the event. I was flabbergasted but agreed almost immediately. How cool, right? It was exceptionally cool to do and it certainly helped me hustle around the show as I was able to visit many booths where cars needing to be judged were located. The Hot Rod class is interesting because there is no hard date cutoff of definition of what a hot rod is. Perfect for me because it allowed a pretty free approach for judging and judge I did. But first maybe I should explain how this all works.

There are five categories to be judged for the GT Awards. Best Domestic, Best Asian, Hot Rod, Truck, Best European. Each of those five categories have a judge. I was the guy for the Hot Rod class, Sean Holman who leads the truck group over the TEN was the Truck category judge, and I did not know any of the other guys. Basically we get the list of cars to judge on Monday night and then on Tuesday we do our judging, select the car we think should win our class, and then forward that information along with our reasons for the choice to the GT people. On Wednesday, Kazunori Yamauchi – the guy who created Gran Turismo itself – looks at the five cars we nominated, decides which one will be the ultimate winner and at a wild Vegas party on Wednesday night he makes the announcement.

The coolest part of the thing was the sheer amount of variety in the stuff I had to check out. Gazillion dollar pro touring builds,  the Icon Derelict, a 1978 Mustang II, straight axle gassers, and the list goes on and on. I decided to keep it quiet while judging. I approached the cars like normal guy with a camera at SEMA and went to town. I didn’t want anyone pitching me or anything like that.

Here’s a sampling of the cars I poured over:

Gran Turismo awards SEMA1 Gran Turismo awards SEMA2 Gran Turismo awards SEMA3 Gran Turismo awards SEMA4 Gran Turismo awards SEMA5

Ultimately, I kept going back to a couple of things.

1.) I wanted the car to be BangShifty and cool.

2.) I wanted the car to be something that people playing the game would want to mess with.

3.) I wanted the car to be something my sons would crave to earn or unlock in the game.

So, now you know where my head was at. I’ll get to my pick in a minute but first I wanted to show you the five vehicles chosen by the judges to vie for the ultimate award, which is the inclusion into an upcoming version of Gran Turismo. Is there a higher automotive honor than that?!

BEST ASIAN IMPORT

BEST HOT ROD
Name: Brett Behrens
Year/Make/Model: 1978 Ford Mustang Hard Top
Color: Kona Blue
Judge: Brian Lohnes, c0-founder, Editor-in-Chief of Bangshift.com and NHRA announcer: Hot Rods have always been about taking something unloved, underpowered, and uncool and turning those attributes on their head. This car is a tour de force in creativity, fabrication and engineering.  A true hot rod in every sense.

So I’m the guy that chose the 1978 Mustang II to win the Gran Turismo awards but it really met all of the criteria that I had in my head going in. This car would be killer to drive in the game, it was unique, it was packed with neat modifications, and engineering, plus it was BangShifty as all hell. I heard that the heavyweights took their time with the car, spending 15 or so minutes crawling around it. That made me feel decent that they spent the time to see what I saw, anyway. I was holding out hope that my choice would get the job done but that Tim Strange built truck was bad ass. The 1,650hp Mercury boat motor powered Charger was insane. The BMW had a hell of a story, and the 240Z was damned sweet as well. There was not a weak sister in the bunch. So who won?
The Datsun! – Like I said, there was no bad picks here and this car was certainly awesome in its own way. If I was judging the Asian class I may have picked it myself. The thing is just gnarly.
So what happened after the picks were made? (scroll past this photo to see)

Brian tough job no I mean a really tough job, so many world class top shelf builds. We only had two days to wander around the show took lots of pictures. On the drive home we talked about witch car would you most want to drive. Just to do that was not easy. I figured out my pick when i realized the one car that stunned me stupid and I had NO pictures of it. I was over, under, in everywhere on this car. The 9.0 Liter Mercuriser twin turbo 1600 hp, full carbon fiber front clip and dark moon black paint to fall in 70 charger. So thanks for the pictures of it.

As somebody who has been playing Gran Turismo for close to 20 years, I would be stoked to race any of those. And nice work with the Mustang II, certainly a deserving choice
But as an import guy, I’m very happy that the Datsun won.
